A mother’s talent for making Pencai for dinner on a random September evening led to a business idea for the retired home maker.
The chef behind Auntie Lan Home Cooking with Love is none other than Auntie Lan herself. She brainstorms and cooks up new dishes while her son comes up with the marketing collateral, takes photos of her food, and manages the online orders. Auntie Lan had always been cooking for a living. Her first job was a food preparation assistant at a steamboat restaurant back in the 1970s, before she opened up her first hawker stall in Holland Village in the 1990s, selling ice kachang and desserts. The stall soon expanded into selling tze-char. Cooking has always been in Auntie Lan’s blood, so rekindling it during retirement, between games of mahjong and caring for her grandchildren didn’t seem too crazy. The best selling Prosperity Pencai is delivered hot and fresh to customers in a claypot, and their popular Homemade XO sauce made with dried scallop, onions, garlic and chilli is the perfect partner served plainly over rice or as a condiment in cooking. Auntie Lan’s golden years are still far ahead of her, as she makes bowl after bowl of Pencai.
