Research has shown that attractive people are more likely to be hired, put in better roles and promoted.

Let’s face it: We judge people based on how they look and we form impressions of them in 30 milliseconds. In fact, being good looking puts you in a favourable position. Research has shown that attractive people are more likely to be hired, put in better roles and promoted. The problem is not all of us are born gorgeous, but there are things we can do to make ourselves more pleasant-looking, help us manage people’s impression of us and boost our chances for better opportunities.

Remove facial hair

For the gentlemen, to shave or not to shave is a matter of what kind of signals you want to send. If you’re looking to impress some investors, it’s in your interest to look a little more mature, and therefore you should consider leaving a slight stubble. If you have an angry face by default, keeping your face hair-free may make you appear more friendly. A clean-shaven face also gives people the impression that you are trustworthy and intelligent.

For the ladies, the answer is quite straightforward: Just remove any facial hair, because the general consensus is that facial hair makes an individual look masculine. Well, unless that’s what you’re going for. But unlike men, it’s best that you avoid shaving. Otherwise, you’ll develop a stubble. Consider waxing or epilating regularly. Alternatively, for more lasting results, laser hair removal treatments. These methods leave you with smooth, hairless skin. Men may consider some of these in place of shaving too.

Put on makeup

A study conducted by Harvard concluded that, apart from making a woman look more attractive, makeup can improve people’s perception of her likeability, competence and trustworthiness, although they noted that women with more dramatic makeup may come across as less trustworthy over time. The researchers suggest that if you need to appear more powerful, you can be a little more dramatic with the makeup, such as using a shinier, deeper lip colour. But if you need to appear more collaborative, perhaps it’s better to go for a more natural look.

Makeup among men is also gaining some approval, thanks to the K-wave that popularised male makeup. Though men in Singapore are generally still quite apprehensive about makeup, concealing with BB and CC creams are still generally accepted. But for stubborn skin problems, you’ll need more than concealing.

Consider aesthetic procedures

The most common problem that is also the most apparent to others is acne. In a 2012 study, researchers found that interviewers were distracted by the skin issues of the interviewees, which led to them recalling fewer interview facts and subsequently rating the interviewees less favourably. But acne and the scars that it leaves behind cannot be effectively concealed under makeup. In fact, choosing the wrong makeup can make your acne worse.

Other lunchtime procedures you can consider to enhance your appearance include botox to get rid of wrinkles, face threading to lift the skin and nose threading to give a sharper look.

One of novel and rather convenient ways to tackle acne is through laser treatments. Concentrated beams of light are directed at problem areas to break down pigments or remove layers of skin.

To the uninitiated, the variety of laser treatment can be mind-boggling, but all you really need to know are what they can do (reducing wrinkles, pigmentation, blemishes, acne scars, just to name a few) and the downtime involved (ranging from no downtime to three weeks).

The more severe cases of acne scars may require subcision. A tri-bevelled needle is inserted under the acne scars to break up the fibrous tissue holding the scar down. The procedure and the subsequent healing of the connective tissues lift the scar, giving the skin a smoother appearance.

A smoother skin not only leaves a better impression but also boosts your confidence. It also makes it easier to apply any form of concealment or makeup.
