I mean, invoices, work and some colleagues don’t spark joy, so do we throw those away?

With Lunar New Year around the corner and Marie Kondo all the rage (Netflix, is this coincidental or what?), some of us in the office wondered if those tips that she shared in her hit reality TV series apply to the office as well. I mean, invoices, work and some colleagues don’t spark joy, so do we throw those away?

Before she got Netflix famous, her famed book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising” has already brought her to places, including the office of The Pool, a women’s magazine based in the UK.

In a YouTube video, Kondo shared tips and helped tidy up the desk of a puffy-eyed staff member of The Pool, who looked like she’s on the verge of a mental breakdown (clutter do get to people sometimes).

Step 1: Decide what you want from your spree

Think about your ideal working lifestyle and aim to pack accordingly.

Step 2: Divide your items into groups

Start with books, papers, miscellaneous things and sentimental goods.

Hold each object and ask yourself if it makes you feel good or helps you do your job well.

Step 3: Decide what sparks joy

Step 4: Thank and discard

Thank objects that don’t spark joy for their service and dispose them.

Step 5: Put items back in order

Avoid piling things up. Keep items visible to have an overview of the objects on your desk.

While we didn’t quite get practical tips about what to do with our invoices, work and some colleagues who don’t spark joy, at least we have a more organised desk and a general sense of wellness.
